In Memory of Paul Brooks

July 28,1932-

-August 20,2013

Last living "Orginal 22"  member of the Historical descendants  of the Tuscarora Nation

We, The Siouan Indian Community of Lumber River are the direct decendants of the "Original 22" of Robeson County, North Carolina. Our tribal ancestors strived for federal and state recognition under the Wheeler-Howard Act of 1934. Almost a century has passed since the first letter was written requesting assistance from our forefather to the Bureau of Indians Afairs on June, 1934.

Our Purpose is to develop an economic infrasture and provide housing to facilitate Tribal self-determination, economic development and governmental revenue base in order to provide for governmental infrastructure to assist its Tribal members. Since 1935, it has been formally established that members of the Nation are entitled to and deserve to have land taken in trust to use as their reservation.

Our Mission, despite the bureaucracy and politics (past and present) which has hindered our progression; is to continue pursuit of our rightful inheritance as a strong federally recognized Indian tribe.
